img_0003A week ago I complained about the lack of new Apps, but surprise, some great Apps came. Let's take a look at one X-Plane 9 by Laminar Research.

First my ratings (based on Game Version 9.0):
Game Type:
Flight Simulation

You can find more reduced Apps here.

I didn't think possible for the iPhone/iPod Touch, a Flight Simulator! X-Plane 9 is "just" that, and no more. So if you want to shoot something you shouldn't buy this and invest your US$ 9.99 into something else.If you like Fligh Simulator or X-Plane on your Mac or PC you should get this now!

This is great game but there are some limitations:

  • No other air traffic
  • No cities (at least I haven't found any)
  • No radio communications etc.
  • Only 1 runway

When you start the game the first time you find yourself sitting on the runway, some instructions would have been nice. So here a quick guide how to get you up in the air:

  • Tap on Brake to loosen your brake
  • Slide the throttle on the left side to the top.
  • Try to keep the plane on the middle of the runway. you can steer the plane to the left and right by turning the iPhone/iPod Touch like a steering wheel.
  • Once you reach about 130 knots tilt the iPhone/iPod Touch so that the top side moves towards you. Don't tilt the iPhone/iPod Touch too much
  • Tap on Gear to retract your gear.
You can access a menu and different views by tapping once on the middle of the screen.

Flying around is fun and it feels realistic and the controls work good and work as you would expect it. You can choose between 4 different air planes and also select weather, wind, time of the day, visibility.

Thanks for those brief instructions... I wasn't sure if the accelerometer on the
phone was used for controlling. My plane seemed to do its own thing. Wish there
was a proper user guide.
