Yesterday I got my refurbished iMac 20" from Apple and I just want to share my experience so far.

Background

My wife complained about the slowness of her old Windows XP machine so I decided to get it replaced. Since my experience with my old Mac Mini was quite pleasant we thought about passing this to her and getting a new Mac for me. The old Windows XP machine will probably serve as a Linux mail server soon, no more Windows!!

So looking at the Apple store the cheapest iMac is HK$ 9400 at the moment. But I remembered a saw this link on the Apple web-site to their refurbished Macs and iPods. A long time ago I looked at that and there was not much there (at least for the Hong Kong Apple store). So I did not have much hope to find a good deal there.

But...

I found many great deals, especially quite a few Macbook Pros and iMac 24" models which were unbelievable cheap. Nevertheless I don't need a notebook and 24" is nice but for me 20" is big enough. So I found my iMac for HK$ 7788, about HK$ 1500 off from the original model.

To buy or not to buy?

Honestly I wasn't sure, quite cheap but refurbished... Apple still gives you 1 year warranty and ensures the all parts have been tested, cleaned etc.

Anyhow in the end I ordered it, and 2 days later in arrived.

The refurbished iMac

I expected a nice white box same as the one's I saw in the shops and in my office, but I only got a plain brown carton box. Cry

Who cares about the box in the end, the inside matters. The inside of the packaging looks exactly like a brand new iMac:

  • Mouse and keyboard are wrapped in plastic foil, cables are wrapped nicely.
  • The screen has a protective sleeve and and another layer of plastic foil.
  • Most importantly also no scratches or marks.

To the Eye the only difference between a brand new HK$9400 iMac and a refurbished HK$ 7788 iMac is only the brown carton box. (Maybe that's the reason for the box, so they don't mix them up in the store or warehouse...)

Power on

Unpacking, connecting and booting the iMac took only a few minutes. Being curious if the screen has any dead pixels or other problems I couldn't wait. But again nothing wrong! The OSX  Welcome Video played and the setup wizard started.

Next I'll write about migrating the Mac Mini to the iMac.
