jsmall_90x60This will a tutorial showing how to build a website like this in Joomla. This will be aimed for beginners who don't know anything about HTML, FTP, PHP, ASP, .NET etc.

Today just a quick introduction

What is Joomla?

Joomla is a Content Management System (CMS), meaning that you write an article like this one, and Joomla takes care about the design of the whole webpage, incl. header, footer, advertisements etc.

Why Joomla?

  • Joomla is published under a GNU/GPL License, which means that it is free to user for private and commercial sites. Many big and small web sites use Joomla.
  • It is rather easy to build websites without knowing anything about HTML and web programming.
  • It can be used on all webservers which allow MySQL Databases and PHP. It is very easy to find a provider that offers this, just search for "Web hosting PHP MySQL". You'll get loads of results.
  • It is still under active development, so their will be new functions in the future.
  • Their are many extensions available (many free, some commercial) that enhance Joomla even further.

How to get started:

  1. Find a webhost and get a domain.
  2. Install Joomla and I'll also show how to install some plugins that make writing articles easier.
  3. Decide on the basic design, there are many websites that offer free design templates and there also some which you need to pay for.
  4. Create some basic menus for the website.
  5. Write some articles.
In the next article I'll show how to find a webhost and a domain.
